Most employed wellness coaches in the US earn roughly $45,000 to $65,000 a year, or about $25 an hour, based on 2026 salary data. Pay depends heavily on the employer, location, and credentials. Self employed coaches have no fixed salary, so their income can fall far below or well above that range. Below are the numbers and what drives them.
Wellness Coach Pay at a Glance
Salary sites do not agree with each other, so one number would be misleading. This table shows what each source reports and what it actually measures.
| Source | What It Reports | Figure |
| Indeed (updated July 2026) | Average hourly pay for health coaches, from job postings | $25.64 per hour |
| Payscale (2026) | Average base salary for health coaches | $67,281 per year |
| Simply Coach summary (March 2026) | Average for certified wellness coaches | $47,264 per year |
| US Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2024) | Median pay for health education specialists, a related occupation | $63,000 per year |
| US Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2024) | Median pay for community health workers, a related occupation | $51,030 per year |
| International Coaching Federation (2022 data) | Average coaching revenue in North America, all coaching types | $67,800 per year |
The spread is wide. The next section explains why.

Why Do Wellness Coach Salary Numbers Disagree So Much?
You will find estimates from about $44,000 to well over $100,000. That is not because someone made a mistake. It is because “wellness coach” is not a tightly defined job.
One analysis points out that the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track “health coach” as its own occupation. There is no official government median for the exact title. So salary websites fill the gap in different ways.
Here are the main reasons the figures drift apart:
- Different data sources. Indeed uses job postings. Payscale uses self reported pay. Salary.com blends several inputs.
- Different job titles. “Wellness coach,” “health coach,” “care coach,” and “lifestyle coach” can mean very different roles.
- Employed versus self employed. A salary is fixed. A coaching business has revenue, expenses, and uneven months.
- Mixed in clinical roles. Some high averages likely include nurses or other licensed staff using a coach title.
- Different dates. Some pages still quote 2023 or 2024 figures.
Treat any single number as a rough marker, not a promise. A range from several sources tells you far more.
How Much Does a Wellness Coach Make Per Year?
For a typical employed coach in the US, a realistic range is about $45,000 to $65,000 a year. Entry level roles often land near the lower end. Coaches with clinical settings, supervisory duties, or strong credentials can reach the upper end or beyond.
Here is what the main sources say:
- A March 2026 summary reported that the average certified wellness coach salary in the USA is $47,264 per year, with most earning between $36,000 and $52,500.
- Payscale’s data for health coaches shows an average base salary of $67,281, with the middle 80 percent falling between about $44,000 and $84,000.
- In Cincinnati, Payscale lists an average wellness coach salary of $52,080. In Denver, it lists $52,510 for a health coach.
Notice how the two national figures differ by about $20,000. Both can be true for different groups of workers.
What the Percentiles Tell You
Percentiles are more honest than averages. Payscale’s health coach data gives a useful picture:
| Percentile | Base Salary |
| 10th percentile | About $44,000 |
| Median | About $67,000 |
| 90th percentile | About $84,000 |
Source: Payscale health coach data, 2026. These figures apply to Payscale’s group of experienced health and wellness coaches, so beginners may start lower.
What Is the Wellness Coach Salary Per Hour?
The best current hourly benchmark comes from Indeed. It reports an average of $25.64 per hour for US health coaches, with a low of $11.22 and a high of $58.62, drawn from about 2,700 salaries in job postings over 36 months.
An earlier update, from June 2026, showed an average of $23.99 an hour. So the figure moves a little from month to month as the posting pool changes.
The low and high ends tell a story too. A beginner on a remote member support team may see $20 to $25 an hour. One current Indeed posting, for example, listed a remote full time role at $20 to $25 an hour. A clinical or specialty role can pay far more.
Be careful with the top cities list on Indeed. Some entries, such as small towns showing $69 an hour, probably reflect one or two high paying postings. They do not describe typical wellness coach pay in those places.
Why Self Employed Hourly Rates Are Different
If you run your own practice, your hourly rate is not your hourly income. You also spend unpaid time on marketing, scheduling, notes, and admin.
The ICF’s 2023 study data, as summarized by Kajabi, found that the average active coach had 12.2 clients and spent 11.9 hours a week coaching. That suggests many coaches work part time or build slowly.
How Much Does a Wellness Coach Make Per Month?
Monthly pay is simply the yearly figure divided by twelve. These are my own arithmetic conversions, before taxes and benefits.
| Annual Pay | Approximate Monthly Pay | Where the Figure Comes From |
| $36,000 | $3,000 | Lower end of one certified coach range |
| $47,264 | $3,939 | Certified wellness coach average, 2026 |
| $53,331 | $4,444 | Indeed’s $25.64 hourly rate at 2,080 hours a year |
| $63,000 | $5,250 | BLS median for health education specialists |
| $67,281 | $5,607 | Payscale health coach average |
If you are self employed, expect larger swings. A coach might earn $1,500 one month and $6,000 the next, depending on client count and package sales.
What Does a Wellness Coach Do?
A wellness coach helps people build healthier habits and stick with them. The work is about behavior change, not diagnosis or treatment. Coaches do not replace doctors, dietitians, or therapists.
Payscale’s task list for health coaches is a good snapshot. It describes contacting clients enrolled in a health program, building customized plans with goals, and encouraging habits that support a higher quality of life.
In practice, the day to day work often includes:
- Holding one on one sessions by phone, video, or in person
- Helping clients set realistic goals around movement, sleep, stress, or eating
- Tracking progress and adjusting the plan
- Running group classes or workplace workshops
- Referring clients to a doctor or other professional when needed
Scope matters. NBHWC’s own exam guidance tells candidates to approach scenarios from a coach’s perspective, keeping the coach’s role and scope of practice in mind. That is a good rule for any coach.
Where Wellness Coaches Work
Employed coaches work in several settings. These include corporate wellness programs, doctor’s offices, gyms, hospital systems, and health tech companies running member coaching. Others build their own online practice.
Each setting pays differently. Insurance and health system roles tend to offer stable pay and benefits. Gyms and community programs may pay less per hour but can be easier to enter.
What Actually Decides Where You Land in the Salary Range?
Several factors move your pay more than the job title does. Here are the ones that matter most.
- Employer type. Health systems and insurers often pay more than gyms or small studios.
- Clinical context. Roles that support patients with chronic conditions usually require more training.
- Credentials. Board certification, a degree in a health field, or a nursing license can open better roles.
- Location. Big metro areas often pay more, but cost of living cancels out part of that gain.
- Niche. Coaching for a specific problem or population is easier to price higher than general health coaching.
- Remote work. Remote roles widen your options, but they can also increase competition.
- Management duties. Payscale notes that overseeing more junior coaches can raise your earning potential.
One source makes a sharp point about niches: a coach who solves a specific, valuable problem usually earns more than a general “health” coach. That is the author’s view rather than hard data. Still, it matches how clients tend to buy coaching.
What Do Wellness Coaches Earn in California?
California tends to pay above the national average. A March 2026 summary based on ZipRecruiter and Salary.com data lists California at $61,147 for certified wellness coaches. That compares with a national average of about $47,000 from the same source.
Payscale offers a local view for San Francisco. It reports an average health coach salary of $55,622, with the middle half earning between $53,000 and $62,000.
On Indeed, San Francisco shows about $30.34 an hour, which is higher than the national average of $25.64.
California’s cost of living is high. A $61,000 salary there may stretch less than $52,000 in a lower cost state. Compare pay with rent before you assume it is a better deal.
What Do Wellness Coaches Earn in New York City?
New York shows a wide spread, depending on the source and the seniority of the role.
| Source | Location | Figure |
| Simply Coach summary (2026) | New York State | $58,935 per year |
| Payscale (2026) | New York City, early career wellness coach | $53,000 per year |
| Indeed (July 2026) | New York City, health coach | $30.84 per hour |
| mindbodygreen (citing Salary.com) | New York City, health coach | About $75,000 per year |
Sources: Simply Coach, Payscale, Indeed, and mindbodygreen.
The mindbodygreen figure is higher than the others. That article gives around $75,000 as the average annual health coaching salary in New York City as of 2025. The site also sells a health coach certification program, so read that number with some caution.
A fair range for an early career NYC coach is the low to mid $50,000s. Experienced coaches in health systems or corporate programs may do better.

Do Corporate, Clinical, and Insurance Coaches Earn More?
Usually, yes, but not always. Corporate wellness pay varies a lot. A 2026 summary lists a corporate wellness coach range of about $23,500 to $59,500, with a middle figure of $41,250. The same summary gives a higher range for health and wellness coaches, from about $49,400 to $63,600 and above.
Insurance and care management roles can pay well. Humana’s remote nonclinical care coach postings give a clear example. One listing showed a salary range of $53,700 to $72,600 per year. Another posting stated that the starting range for the role in that location was $60,000 to $65,000 a year.
Those jobs often ask for more than a coaching certificate. The remote listing asked for a bachelor’s degree in an allied health science and experience conducting health assessments. So the pay reflects a broader skill set.
What About Specific Employers Like Humana, YMCA, and Herbalife?
Here is what I could verify:
- Humana. Its care coach roles are real salaried jobs. Pay is posted in each listing and varies by location and experience.
- YMCA. Wellness coach roles at a YMCA can focus on guiding members on exercise equipment. One Florida listing described that kind of facility based work, and it did not show a pay figure. Check your local branch’s posting.
- Herbalife. This is not a salary job. Herbalife distributors are independent. Their earnings come from product sales and commissions.
Herbalife publishes its own earnings disclosure. For 2023, it states that about 116,000 US distributors ordered products for resale, about 106,000 of them earned money, and the majority joined only for a product discount. In a typical month, only about 56,000 earned money. So a “Herbalife wellness coach salary” does not exist in the usual sense.
I could not verify reliable pay data for several other employers in this niche, such as Lyra, Protera Health, or The Healthstyle Emporium. Check each company’s current job listings for real ranges.
Can a Wellness Coach Make Six Figures?
It is possible, but it is not typical. Even Payscale’s 90th percentile for employed health coaches sits near $84,000. Reaching six figures usually means leadership, a specialty, or a successful business.
For self employed coaches, the ICF’s 2023 global study offers a benchmark. It estimated that average annual coaching revenue in North America was $67,800. Some secondary sites quote a different figure, so I am using the ICF’s own summary.
Two cautions apply to that number:
- It covers all kinds of coaching, not just wellness. The ICF notes that business coaches tend to have above average revenue.
- It is revenue, not profit. Software, insurance, marketing, taxes, and certification costs come out of it.
A Simple Example of the Math
Here is a hypothetical to show how self employed income works. It is an illustration, not a forecast.
Say you coach 20 paid hours a week for 46 weeks. That is 920 hours a year. To bring in $75,000 in revenue, you would need to average about $82 per paid hour. After expenses and self employment taxes, your take home would be noticeably lower.
That is why many new coaches keep a part time job while they build clients. It also explains why packages and group programs often work better than selling single sessions.
How Do Life Coaches Compare With Wellness Coaches?
Life coaches and wellness coaches overlap, but the field data is different. The ICF’s numbers describe coaches in general. They do not separate wellness from life coaching in a way you can compare directly.
The ICF’s North American revenue average of $67,800 is a reasonable reference point for self employed coaches overall. A wellness coach working for an employer will often see a lower but steadier figure.
The practical difference is the setting. Wellness coaching connects naturally to health care, insurance, and employer programs. Those buyers have budgets and sometimes prefer certified coaches. Life coaching is more often sold directly to individuals.
How to Become a Health and Wellness Coach
There is no single legal path. In most states, coaching is not a licensed profession. Still, the most recognized credential is National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, often written NBC HWC. It is offered through NBHWC in partnership with the National Board of Medical Examiners.
Here is the path, step by step:
- Choose an NBHWC approved training program. You must complete one before you can apply for the exam.
- Complete 50 coaching sessions. NBHWC says these must meet the requirements listed on its coaching log.
- Meet the education or work requirement. You need an associate’s degree or higher, or 4,000 hours of work experience, and both can be in any field.
- Apply and pay the exam fee. The fee is $400.
- Sit for the exam. It is offered three times each year, with a separate application period for each window.
Always check NBHWC’s current page before you apply. Fees and dates can change.
How Much Does Certification Cost?
Costs vary a lot by program type. The exam fee is on top of tuition.
| Program Type | Example | Listed Cost |
| Community college course | Randolph Community College | $180 tuition, plus books |
| Community college training | Delgado Community College | $1,000 for students with a degree or license, plus textbooks |
| University graduate certificate | University of Kentucky | $806 per credit |
| Private program | Executive coaching college program | $4,595 early registration, $5,095 regular |
| Private program | mindbodygreen | $5,999 |
| Private program | iPEC Health and Wellness Coach Training | $13,995 |
Sources: each program’s published page, and a Life Coach Magazine roundup for mindbodygreen and iPEC. Prices may have changed.
A reasonable total is anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over $14,000. The cheapest NBHWC approved options tend to come through community colleges.
Does Board Certification Raise Your Salary?
I could not find a reliable public study that isolates the pay effect of board certification. Some training companies claim that it helps. Those claims come from sellers of the training, so treat them as marketing.
What certification clearly does is open doors. Employers in health care often prefer or require credentials. BLS says the same about a related occupation: employers may require or prefer that health education specialists obtain certification.
So certification may not guarantee a raise. But it can help you qualify for roles that pay better. Weigh the cost against the jobs you actually want.
What About Wellness Coach Salary Outside the US?
This article focuses on the US. Pay in India, the UK, Canada, and the Philippines differs because of currency, living costs, and job markets. I did not verify reliable local data for those countries here.
If you work outside the US, use local job boards and official labor statistics for your country. Do not convert US figures directly. A US salary and a local salary buy very different things.
Is Wellness Coaching a Good Career Right Now?
It can be, if you set realistic expectations. Demand is tied to the wider growth in health and social service jobs. BLS projects that community and social service occupations will grow much faster than average from 2024 to 2034. That group’s median pay was $57,530, above the all occupation median of $49,500.
BLS also estimates that health education specialists held about 71,800 jobs in 2024. Community health workers held about 65,100 jobs. These are related roles, not wellness coaches exactly, but they show the size of the field.
Here is a balanced view:
| Strengths | Challenges |
| Flexible settings, including remote work | No single official salary benchmark |
| Meaningful, people focused work | Entry level pay can be modest |
| Many ways to specialize | Self employment income can be uneven |
| Growing interest from employers and insurers | Credentials and rules vary widely |
How Can You Raise Your Wellness Coach Income?
You have more control than the averages suggest. These moves tend to help most.
- Get credentialed for the roles you want. If you are aiming at health systems, check what their postings ask for.
- Add a related qualification. A degree in a health field, or a nursing license, widens your options.
- Pick a niche. Specific problems, such as managing a chronic condition or workplace stress, are easier to price.
- Move into supervision or program design. Leading a team or running a program usually pays more than delivering sessions alone.
- Target payers with budgets. Employers, insurers, and health systems can fund coaching at scale.
- Sell packages, not single sessions. If you are self employed, packages create steadier revenue.
- Track your real hourly income. Include unpaid admin time so you price with your costs in mind.
So What Should You Expect to Earn?
For most employed coaches, expect about $45,000 to $65,000 a year, or roughly $25 an hour. Entry level roles can start lower. Clinical, insurance, and supervisory roles can pay more. Self employed income is the most uncertain, and the ICF’s $67,800 North American average is revenue across all coaching types, not take home pay.
Before you commit, read current job postings in your area. Compare their pay and requirements with the ranges here. That will tell you more than any average.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a wellness coach make per year?
Most employed wellness coaches earn about $45,000 to $65,000 a year in the US. Averages from salary sites range from about $47,000 to $67,000. Self employed coaches have no fixed salary, and their income can be much lower or higher.
What is the average wellness coach salary per hour?
Indeed reported an average of $25.64 per hour for US health coaches in July 2026. The reported range runs from about $11.22 to $58.62. Entry level and remote roles often start closer to $20 to $25.
How much do wellness coaches make per month?
At $47,264 a year, the monthly figure is about $3,939 before taxes. At $63,000, it is about $5,250. Self employed coaches often see bigger swings from month to month depending on client numbers.
What does a wellness coach earn in California?
A March 2026 summary lists California at $61,147 for certified wellness coaches. Payscale shows an average of $55,622 for health coaches in San Francisco. California pay is often higher than the national average, but so are living costs.
Do wellness coaches in New York City earn more?
Often, but it varies by source and experience. Payscale lists $53,000 for early career NYC wellness coaches. Indeed shows about $30.84 an hour. Another source cites around $75,000, but it comes from a company that sells coach training.
Does board certification increase wellness coach pay?
I found no reliable study that measures it directly. Certification can help you qualify for health care and insurance roles, where employers may prefer credentials. Whether that leads to higher pay depends on the job you land.
What does NBHWC certification require?
You need an NBHWC approved training program, 50 coaching sessions, and either an associate’s degree or 4,000 hours of work experience. The exam fee is $400. The exam is offered three times a year.
Can a wellness coach make six figures?
It is possible but not typical. Payscale’s 90th percentile for employed health coaches is about $84,000. Six figures usually requires leadership, a strong specialty, or a successful self employed practice. Revenue is also not the same as profit.
Do life coaches earn more than wellness coaches?
There is no clean comparison. The ICF reports an average North American coaching revenue of $67,800 across all coaching types. Wellness coaches in employed roles often earn a steadier but sometimes lower income. Your setting matters more than the label.
Do Herbalife distributors earn a salary?
No. Herbalife distributors are independent. Their earnings come from product sales and commissions. Herbalife’s own 2023 US disclosure says most distributors joined only for a product discount, and only some earned money in a typical month.
What does a corporate wellness coach earn?
Estimates vary widely. One 2026 summary lists a range of roughly $23,500 to $59,500 for corporate wellness coaches. Roles that also require program management or clinical training can pay more, so check specific postings.
Is wellness coaching a good career?
It can be a rewarding one if you set realistic goals. Demand is supported by growth in health related jobs, but pay is modest at the entry level. Specializing, getting credentialed, and targeting employers with budgets can improve your outlook.
How long does certification take?
It depends on the program. Two NBHWC approved programs I found describe four month courses. You also need 50 coaching sessions and must meet the exam window dates, so most people should plan for several months.
